PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The highest performing waterborne transparent, semi-transparent, full body or Clear Wood Finish on the market. TWP® W-100 Series is a water reducible chalk and surface penetrating acrylate surface sealer with superior mildew & fungal resistance, inherent color fastness, real toughness and strong water repellency. An ideal UV resistant finish for vertical wood substrates new and old as well as masonry. Excellent for vertical masonry surfaces including interior “smooth wall” looks and Venetian plaster including bathroom/shower areas. Depending upon the type and amount, pigmentation produces everything from clear & fully transparent looks to semi-transparent and full body looks in one coat (2 or more coats recommended). To increase transparency, add W-100 Clear UV until desired look is achieved. Fully pigmented, the system has achieved excellent longevity…beyond all common water-borne premium paints and most industrial urethanes on the market. The “TBF” formula is our latest upgrade.

PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS

A special W-100 “UV” Clear Wood, Flat Finish formulation is available with enhanced Ultra-Violet light resistance. This “UV” formula is particularly useful when making transparent and semi-transparent looks for custom finishes (Feaux finishes, Venetian Plaster, etc.) or when the appearance of wood without a coating is desired. Fast dry allows it to be used much like a “pigmented lacquer” but without the “melt” or “bleed”. Because of this combination of properties, it can be used in high-end bathrooms (over Venetian Plasters, Wood, Masonry, etc.), kitchens and common living spaces (over Decorative, “Smooth Wall” & “Feaux” Finishes).

Our new Maximum Performance Package is the W-100 TBF formula (Tropical & Bamboo Formula) with maximum mold/fungus, water repellency and UV resistance (April, 2012) – can be pigmented (for maximum longevity and sun blockage) or used as CLEAR. If used outside, consider adding pigments to reduce maintenance.

The W-100 “UV” formula can be mixed with any TWP W-100 pigmented sealer or Graffiti No More & MaxLife Paints to achieve a long-lasting finish with a stained look. Note: Fully Transparent and Semi-transparent wood finishes are always preferred over clear wood finish applications on bare or over lightly stained surfaces because of increased longevity and longer maintenance cycles

Decorative and “Feaux” Finishes for Interior and Exterior Applications over Wood, Sheetrock or Masonry : These materials are commonly used for interior or exterior Decorative and “Feaux” finishes achieving a variety of looks ranging from acid-stained concrete looks to multi-color to marble-like looks. Using a combination of differing pigmentation, varying pigment loadings and decorative application tools, a variety of looks can be obtained. The fast dry allows several coats to be applied in a day to achieve that textured, multi-colored look. The Clear TWP W-100 “UV” can be applied over the entire surface to assure an even, totally flat sheen look but with maximum water-repellency. For exterior uses, consider using the W-100 TBF formula for maximum performance.

When using TWP W-100 “UV” Clear as a clear coat over bare, lightly stained or clear primed wood, 3 full millage spray coats (1.5-2.0 mils DFT/coat are recommended for max longevity (when using brush, pad or roll, 6-9 full wet edge coats required to achieve proper millage).

Routine Maintenance : Fully exposed vertical surfaces (especially south or west facing surfaces) must be maintained on an annual basis to keep wood from changing colors and prevent subsequent release of clear film from aging wood; horizontal surfaces (beam tops, window ledges, wall caps, etc.) will require more frequent maintenance. If less millage is applied than recommended above, more frequent maintenance is required.

PRODUCT USES

Vertical Surfaces: New wood, old wood, masonry walls, aged (not shiny) galvanized surfaces. Interior & exterior beams, walls & natural wood ceilings, plywood, sheetrock, “Feaux” or marbleized surfaces. The W-100 series can be used to produce a variety of transparencies and looks; can be used where a clear wood finish, semi-transparent or “low sheen pigmented lacquer-like look” are desired.

Horizontal Surfaces: Can be used on 2” X 4” or 2” x 6” decking including redwood, cedar, Douglas fir and pressure treated wood. We recommend that all exterior decking be primed with FSC/AMTECO primers and that all topcoats be pigmented for increased longevity (can be fully transparent or partially transparent with automotive grade FSC pigments). Three coats by spray recommended for decks and horizontal surfaces like rail or wall caps to ensure pinhole free film and maximum water repellency against standing water (Note: this is not a swimming pool coating so there are limits to standing water resistance).

SURFACE PREPARATION

NEW WOOD:

For best results on smooth wood, scuff sand, apply Z-90 Wood Magic™ Plus & power wash entire surface to open wood grain as well as remove surface dirt, sawdust & oil and restore maximum color. Hardwoods may require rough sanding with 60-80 grit to achieve adhesion – always do test area before proceeding to entire project. On rough, sandblasted or resawn wood, apply Z-90 Plus & power wash. Let dry at least 24 hours before application. 2-51 Super Prime™ (Clear or White) should be used if tannin bleed is a concern (redwood, Douglas fir, cedar etc.) and for smooth wood surfaces. For new pressure treated wood, use same procedure as above.

OLD WOOD

Remove mildew and loose wood fiber by application Z-90 Wood Magic™ or Z-90™ Plus (for organic growth removal) followed by power wash. Apply a first coat of Prime & Seal® or Bio-Control Prime & Seal®. Bio-Safe Bio-Control Prime & Seal® should be used over organic growth prone surfaces & previously applied linseed oil or other natural oil based finishes. Use 2-51 Super Prime™ with added Mildew/Organic Growth Package for tannin bleeding woods.

BAMBOO and HARDWOODS

Clean surface by removing discoloration, oils, tannin and organic growth with Z-90 Plus diluted between 1:1 and 3:1 using warm to hot water (increased strength can have dramatic impact on color enhancement and organic growth removal). Allow Z-90 Plus to sit on surface for 5-15 minutes before agitation. Be sure to agitate and scrub Z-90 Plus wetted surface with Brown ScotchBrite (Maroon pads for softer woods) to achieve aggressive cleaning and deeper “tooth” for improved adhesion. If “tooth” is not adequate, use 60-80 grit sandpaper depending upon hardness or substrate (must be able to hide sand scratches).

Always do a test sample first with pull test to ensure that appearance and adhesion is acceptable. Allow wood moisture to drop below 15% before coating (usually overnight after cleaning in shop with fan driven air circulation at 75 degrees and less than 50% Relative Humidity; 2-3 days when outside and onsite).

Apply 3 coats of W-100 “TBF” (always stir with drill motor mixer to achieve proper viscosity) for maximum protection in split coats or 2 passes per coat due to “roundness” and inherent slipperiness of bamboo. Apply each split coat in 2.75 to 4 Mils wet per pass (0.9-1.3 Mils Dry per pass); allow 30 min to 1 hr for thru-dry of each split coat or pass @ 75 degrees F; allow 4 hr or longer between each coat (two passes per coat). Air movement and heat will help speed up cure. Total DFT 5-7 mils.

After 24 hr. cure, remove surfactants by washing surface with Z-90 diluted 4 to 1 for faster ultimate cure and hardening of coating surface. Use of cloth agitation is helpful – surface will feel less slippery when surfactant is removed.

Note: W-100 UV and W-100 “TBF” will always, yield a very natural, muted, low sheen look – for deep, rich lacquer or varnish look, use 300 TBF Series or combination of 300 QD “TBF” Series and SA-1000/1275 “TBF” (clear or transparent pigment added for maximum longevity).

MASONRY (New or Old) : Scrub with Z-90 Wood Magic Plus or “The Bio-Safe® Bio-Cleaner” (Inherently Safe: 100% Food & Cosmetic Grade) and power wash to remove surface contamination; “open up” smooth toweled masonry surfaces for absorption; remove organic growth and chalk. Allow surface to dry overnight or until dry. Use Fans circulation to speed up dry…open windows. Prime stucco and sealed block with Prime & Seal® #1 or Bio-Control Prime & Seal® (best but must have pigmented topcoat). For block use, apply Prime & Seal® #1 and Prime & Seal® #2 to fill pore space – if is light weight, low density block one may not be able to achieve full waterproof status.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES

Remove excess chalk, dirt and any other surface contamination before coating. Chalk will require application of Z-90™ Plus or The Bio-Cleaner™ followed by agitation with stiff bristle brush, Scoth-Brite pads or other abrasive means to remove partially bonded chalk. Apply Bio-Control Prime & Seal® over surfaces previously coated with linseed oil or other natural oil based finishes.

Scrape areas with loose paint until full adhesion is achieved; sand edges until smooth; remove sand residue; brush apply Bio-Control Prime & Seal® or 2-51 Super Prime to secure edges; prime entire surface with the same primer. W-100 must be pigmented when used over these primers as they will yellow.

APPLICATION & SURFACTANT REMOVAL

METHOD OF APPLICATION

Brush, roll, applicator pad or spray – with spray & backroll always best for fastest build and most even look. Apply smoothly, always in the direction of the grain. Avoid vertical lapping on horizontal lap siding by lateral application in 3-4 foot passes. On vertical surfaces apply up and down, restricting vertical lapping to surface breaks where lap marks are less visible. When using brush, roll or applicator pads, always 1-2 additional coats to achieve proper millage. Desired film thickness 1.6-2.5 mils DFT/coat. With primer, total system Dry Film Thickness (DFT) is 4.5 to 6 mils. Always stir/mix product with drill motor mixer – use stick to check bottom of can for resin/additives left on bottom of container – if white or color residue is still present, scrape bottom of bucket and remix with drill motor until all residue is gone from bottom of bucket.

SPREAD RATE

200-400 ft²/gal per coat depending on surface porosity for most surfaces. For rough textured or unsealed open surfaces, application ratio may be 100-200 ft²/gal per coat. For opaque finish, apply 2 coats by spray & backroll over Bio-Control Prime & Seal®.

THINNING AND CLEAN UP: Water

IMPORTANT: “Surfactant Removal” for Showers and All Other Surfaces to Prevent Surfactant Bleed and Speed up Cure Rate: Surfactant buildup on the coating surface is common due to new, LOW Voc formulations of all water-borne products. We recommend using Z-90 or “The Bio-Cleaner” diluted to be applied to surface after 2 days of cure…surface will feel very slippery…agitate gently with soft cloth or towel…rinse with water or lightly power wash. This will prevent any color distortion or yellowing due to surfactant bleed. It also speeds up film cure. If you do not do this, the W-100 may turn white and soften upon exposure to moisture (shower water, dew, rain or sprinklers).

WARNING: This product is toxic to fish. Do not apply directly to water. Do not contaminate water by cleaning of equipment or disposal of wastes. Do not apply in high humidity or low temperatures.

Routine Maintenance : This is critical. Yearly touch-up recommended for all projects. Clears require significant yearly maintenance if fully exposed to the sun.

Precautionary Statement:

Contains high levels of mildecides & fungicides. Avoid breathing of spray mist. Wear protective goggles & rubber gloves when spraying. Remove contaminated clothing & wash before re-use. Wash exposed skin areas with plenty of soap & water.
